North Carolina nonprofits have an exciting conference coming up

Nonprofit groups off all sizes in the Tar Heel State have valuable learning and networking opportunities coming up at the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits' next statewide conference. The 2014 Statewide Conference for North Carolina's Nonprofit Sector features three days of events to help charitable groups and other nonprofits create strong local connections and learn about many different avenues to become more effective in their missions. The event takes place at Sheraton Imperial Hotel at Research Triangle Park from Wednesday, Sept. 17 through Friday, Sept. 19.

First Nonprofit Group, which is partnered with the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits, will offer an informative exhibit as part of the event's marketplace, which will be open for one full day on Thursday, Sept. 18. The information from First Nonprofit Group will center around the choices that governmental agencies, tribal enterprises and charitable organizations can make to lessen the impact of state unemployment tax (SUTA) costs while still meeting the necessary obligations. Nonprofits can declare as reimbursing employers with the NC Department of Employment Security and directly compensate dollar-for-dollar any unemployment claims made by former employees. This approach can save a significant amount of money, but could also lead to increased liability. First Nonprofit Group offers solutions for businesses that combine lower costs with a high level of security, meeting obligations while freeing up funds for other uses at an organization.

The 2014 conference features a wide variety of events, from educational sessions about adaptive leadership, sustainability and legal updates to dedicated networking periods and the presentation of the 2014 Nonprofit Sector Stewardship Awards. Individual consulting events, exhibits from a variety of nonprofit assistance organizations and other opportunities will also be available. We first started using First Nonprofit’s Unemployment Savings Program when we were a small startup nonprofit.  We didn’t have an HR department and needed expertise in the event that an unemployment claim was made.  We knew we were eligible to be a reimbursing employer, but weren’t sure how to navigate that process.  They made it easy to set things up, plan for, and then manage claims when they came at a very reasonable cost. The amount of time and stress they’ve saved us dealing with all this has been worth way more than the cost.  We’ve now grown to a large nonprofit and do have an HR department but have no plans to stop using their services.  I highly recommend them to every nonprofit I come into contact with!

Throughout our membership in the Unemployment Savings Program, First Nonprofit understood our demands, community dynamics, and the importance of seamless services; that allowed us to serve our constituents better.

First Nonprofit’s unemployment programs provide our member schools two operating elements crucial to their ability to provide high quality public education: savings and budget certainty. Capable, committed teachers are the key to student success. By participating in the unemployment insurance savings plan, charter public schools gain peace of mind and are able to invest more money in their teachers.
