Meet The First Nonprofit Staff: Pam Dejkhrut

Pam Dejkhrut oversees the accounting department at First Nonprofit and has been with the company for nearly six years. Born and raised in Thailand, Pam received her bachelor’s degree in business administration at the University of The Thai Chamber of Commerce in Bangkok.

After she graduated, her father, who worked for the Thai embassy, accepted a four-year position in the United States and Pam came along to continue her accounting and finance education. She received an MBA with an emphasis in information systems and a master’s of accounting and financial management at DeVry University in Chicago. While her family returned to Thailand after the four years, Pam stayed in the states.

“They left me,” she said, laughing. ” But I go back and see them once a year – that’s something I like about working at First Nonprofit, they never have a problem with letting me go back and visit once a year.”

Pam said her favorite thing about First Nonprofit is her coworkers. English is her second language and she said her coworkers are all very good about making sure she understands what they are saying and that they understand her.

“I’m really proud of what I’m doing here,” she said. “And I really enjoy the people I work with.”

Pam said she also enjoys working with numbers and has a passion for accounting, which her position as assistant controller at First Nonprofit allows her to pursue. She said she is happy to use her skills to help First Nonprofit continue to grow and improve its business.

While she has only lived in Chicago since coming to the U.S., Pam has visited many other cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York, and states including Florida, Michigan and Iowa. She said of all the places she has been, San Francisco is her favorite because of the great food and wine. Her coworkers consider her a “foodie,” and she enjoys trying new dishes when she travels.

Pam doesn’t miss a chance to eat out in her hometown of Chicago either, and said her favorite food is Italian, especially seafood dishes. However, she also loves to try different Spanish restaurants on a mission to find the perfect paella.  Her other hobbies include going to the gym, where she enjoys swimming. She also watches different crime-drama television show such as CSI.

We first started using First Nonprofit’s Unemployment Savings Program when we were a small startup nonprofit.  We didn’t have an HR department and needed expertise in the event that an unemployment claim was made.  We knew we were eligible to be a reimbursing employer, but weren’t sure how to navigate that process.  They made it easy to set things up, plan for, and then manage claims when they came at a very reasonable cost. The amount of time and stress they’ve saved us dealing with all this has been worth way more than the cost.  We’ve now grown to a large nonprofit and do have an HR department but have no plans to stop using their services.  I highly recommend them to every nonprofit I come into contact with!

Throughout our membership in the Unemployment Savings Program, First Nonprofit understood our demands, community dynamics, and the importance of seamless services; that allowed us to serve our constituents better.
