Our clients are nonprofits—large and small, startups and centenarians, rural and urban.
We specialize in organizations that strive to enrich the arts, improve education, and impact lives. We specialize in agencies that serve displaced and disadvantaged populations, society’s most vulnerable—children, the elderly, the mentally and physically disabled, the addicted, and emotionally troubled. We specialize in organizations that foster new ideas, spur community action, and safeguard the planet and its resources.
We serve all nonprofits.
Here’s what our nonprofits have to say about partnering with First Nonprofit®.
The Chinese American Service League (CASL) began almost 30 years ago with a group of friends in the social work and education sectors answering to the needs of Chicago’s Chinese community, a growing immigrant community that struggled with English and needed assistance with government paperwork and bureaucracy. CASL has helped more than 7,000 immigrants to become U.S. citizens. Currently we have an operating budget of over $8 million, 80% of which is from government funding and the rest comes through foundation supports and fund raising efforts. We serve over 17,000 people a year with our over 250 full- and part-time bilingual staff. CASL is now the largest social service agency serving Chinese in the Midwest.
Through the years, as the agency expands to meet service needs, it has not been easy for CASL to balance its operational costs and, at the same time, provide quality services. We’ve found that First Nonprofit Insurance Company® shares similar goals with us. Your wide and encompassing coverage, affordable and competitive premium, as well as a highly professional team have met our insurance needs for over a decade. We hope First Nonprofit® will continue to maintain its high standard of service and assist nonprofit agencies like CASL that have large exposures and to continue to offer services to minimize our risks and keep our premium affordable. We hope to continue this partnership for a long time
We have been insured with First Nonprofit® for many years [since 1986]. First Nonprofit has been a wonderful organization for Family Focus to partner with in providing great advice and expertise in risk management. I would highly recommend First Nonprofit® for any type business.
I met with [insurance advisor] Scott Holden yesterday to review our renewal information and was pleasantly surprised with the result. Please accept our deep appreciation for all the thought and time you put into our renewal. As I am sure you are well aware, these are very challenging times for many not-for-profit organizations in human services and OHU is no exception. To realize an actual reduction in our renewal could not have come at a better time. Thanks so much and it is great being a partner with Gallagher and the First Nonprofit® team!
I would like to take this time to comment on how well First Nonprofit Insurance Company® is handling our property/casualty, umbrella, and auto insurance needs over the last few years. While providing us with reasonable premiums, it has also assisted us with programs relating to loss control and, through routine site visits, has provided us with ongoing updates relating to all areas of safety.
First Nonprofit Insurance Company® knows the major issues which face nonprofit organizations and does its utmost to keep the organization protected and our exposures down. Its claims services are excellent. Prompt responses are the norm. As well, any time there are questions relating to our coverages, they respond a timely manner.
Phil Warth, [former] president and CEO of First Nonprofit Insurance Company®, over the years has taken a personal interest in his company’s clients. He has invited his clients to programs at which he has asked for input on how the insurance company can be more involved with assisting the nonprofit world in the area of insurance. His attendance, in person, and his interest in the nonprofit organizations that were represented is something I will always remember.
We submitted the claim for some damage involving an employee and a person dropping off some donated items at one of our stores. Within two hours of submitting our claim electronically, we received a call from your claims department and the settlement process was quickly assessed and handled. Our director of safety was very impressed and called me specifically to comment on the great work by your staff. Usually the calls I get are the complaints about how slow the process is or how the adjustors do not pay close attention to detail. We are excited at this first [claims] experience and hope that we can work together to keep the process smooth (but hopefully not too often).
The agency [SHORE] has been covered by the policies of First Nonprofit® for several years and has been pleased with both the level of coverage and the follow-up on claims and other communications. The staff are always very courteous and responsive. We are very pleased with the unique worker’s compensation [coverage] both due to the fairness of rates and understanding of methodology in establishing our premiums. It has been refreshing to not have to deal with an auditor at the end of a policy period, which many times led to disagreements about classifying employees for rate determination purposes.
The Night Ministry has been very happy with the services of First Nonprofit®. We truly feel as though we are in good hands with them. Whenever we have had a potential claim, First Nonprofit® has responded to it in a nonjudgmental fashion. Its associates work to become intrinsically familiar with the situation surrounding the potential claim and provide us with advice on how to collect and document information about it.
When it has been necessary for our frontline service delivery employees to interact with First Nonprofit® associates, our employees report that the interactions are productive and that they felt comfortable dealing with someone from the insurance industry. It is a world they are not accustomed to navigating.
The Night Ministry has been incredibly pleased with how First Nonprofit® has kept any rate increases reasonable in what we know to be a turbulent market. The company was our carrier when we had a budget of $2.5 million and has grown with us and supported us as we grew to an annual budget of more than $5.5 million. Insurance costs were a significant concern during our recent growth period. However, by working with First Nonprofit, we were able to contain our costs while still ensuring that we had the coverage we need.
Finally—and most importantly—I appreciate how First Nonprofit® understands the needs of nonprofits and the idiosyncrasies associated with delivering social services to vulnerable populations. For example, First Nonprofit® has worked with us to ensure that those who drive our vehicles, and who might have less-than-stellar driving records, are still able to drive for us and receive coverage. They have helped to arrange driving courses and have taken a look at each employee on a case-by-case level.
As unusual as it is to say, we look forward to our annual risk assessment visit, as it is a learning opportunity for us. As a result of one such visit, we revised our policies regarding how to deal with charges of sexual abuse and molestation. First Nonprofit® provided us with guidance in writing the policy and gave us several templates to which we referred throughout the revision process.
It is my understanding that First Nonprofit® is seeking to expand its coverage area to other states. It is good to know that other nonprofits might now be able to take advantage of First Nonprofit®’s excellent customer service and insurance coverage.
