First Nonprofit was established in response to the “hard” cycle of the insurance market. Increased rates and a reduction in coverage availability threatened to leave many nonprofit organizations unable to afford insurance of any kind. By establishing an alternative insurance vehicle like First Nonprofit, there was a guarantee that affordable coverage would always be available to protect agencies and other nonprofit organizations.
We are wholly owned by Mutual Insurers Holding Company, which affords our policyholders all the rights of mutual ownership. Since we are owned by our policyholders, we have no investors or donors to satisfy. And because we were established by nonprofit leaders, First Nonprofit is willing to assume risks that other insurers refuse and to respond to nonprofits’ critical needs.

First Nonprofit insures only 501(c)3 charitable, religious and educational organizations. The specialized coverage we offer includes property, general and professional liability, auto, umbrella, workers compensation, directors and officers liability and employment practices liability.
Today, First Nonprofit insures organizations in 27 states: Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Virginia, Washington D.C., Wisconsin and in Ohio operating as First Insurance Company for Nonprofits.
Insurance coverage is written through independent agents across all admitted states and also through our wholly owned subsidiary, First Nonprofit Insurance Agency (FNIA), in Illinois. FNIA functions as a multi-line brokerage for direct sales of property, casualty, life, accident and health insurance. They also support our independent agents for the sale of life, accident and health insurance. FNIA also offers 401(k) and 403(b) retirement plans.
First Nonprofit Companies provides unemployment insurance cost savings programs. The FNC Unemployment Savings and Bonded Service Programs provide alternatives to the state unemployment insurance funds. These programs remove the nonprofits from the shared pooling concept to insure they only pay for their own claims. FNC currently serves more than 1,200 nonprofit organizations across the country.
