Problem Solving
Our professional consultants have helped many nonprofits develop risk management policies, procedures, and practices specific to their operations. We have responded to highly diverse needs such as: Why are employee injuries increasing and what can we do to turn around this trend? How should we perform self-inspections to correct hazards before an accident occurs? How can we improve our accident investigation procedures to better reduce the risk of future injuries? How should we organize safety committees? Why are people falling on our premises and what can we do about this? First Nonprofit® has a network of experienced consultants who help nonprofits with their special problems.
CARF Inspections
The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities requires the nonprofits it accredits to have independent safety inspections of the physical facilities from which they operate accredited programs. Our consultants perform these required safety inspections, providing reports specifically designed to meet this accreditation requirement.
Onsite Risk Management Analysis
Our Onsite Risk Management Analysis offers your nonprofit an individualized overall assessment of your risk management program. Through this program our consultants analyze your claims history and visit your nonprofit to discuss your operations, programs, policies, and procedures. This is followed by an observation of your facilities. The consultant then discusses your nonprofit’s risk management strengths and the areas in which you should consider making improvements. This is an opportunity for clarifying needs and considering options. You will receive a written report confirming our recommendations, and resources to assist you in implementation.
Risk Control Management Studies
Risk Control Management studies apply management consulting practices to risk management issues. These studies address not only what needs to be done, but also how to achieve these objectives within your nonprofit. The process begins with an in depth onsite evaluation of strengths and opportunities. Issues addressed include the use of historical information on losses; how operations, programs, policies, and procedures support achieving your goals; and how attitudes and values affect your risk management efforts. Activities include analysis of claims causes and trends, observation of operations, and interviews with employees at all levels. Our consultant then applies an organizational modeling method to systematically identify strengths and opportunities, and prepares a formal report for your nonprofit. The consultant returns to your organization to present and discuss his or her report, which includes findings, recommended objectives, suggested methods, and a timetable for implementation. Ongoing support for your nonprofit is offered.

Safe Driving Hotline
This service gives your nonprofit timely information about drivers who are taking risks on the road and may be slipping into bad habits. It is an early warning system that allows you to help these drivers before they are involved in an accident. Through this service you can prevent accidents, save lives, and enhance your public image. This program, the SafetyFirst Hotline, is administered by SafetyFirst, a leading vehicle safety organization.
Here is how the program works:
- You place decals provided by SafetyFirst on your nonprofit vehicles. The decals state that “Safety is My Goal” and include a toll-free number for motorists to report risky driving. Each decal is uniquely numbered and matched to the vehicle.
- Motorists’ calls are taken at a 24/7 call center where trained operators validate and develop observation details. A Motorist Observation Report is completed, checked, and dispatched to your fleet manager, typically within one hour. Training materials appropriate to the report are attached.
- Your fleet manager identifies the driver of the vehicle and has a coaching session with that driver, using the training materials matched to the poor driving behavior reported. Drivers have the opportunity to discuss the situations and what changes they will make in their driving practices.
- Your fleet manager and the driver sign and return the report for closeout in the SafetyFirst data base. This verifies that the coaching is being done.
- You receive monthly summary reports.
- SafetyFirst provides “Ten Minute Training Topics” training packages each month for your use in training all drivers.
This service works especially well for nonprofits with twenty or more agency vehicles and designated fleet managers.
Group Driver Training: Ten Minute Training Topics
This service allows you to provide professional-level training to your drivers in short monthly sessions that can be coordinated with other operational meetings. Because it is your management doing the training, in person and not through the internet, the process demonstrates the importance your nonprofit places on safe driving.
This program, Ten-Minute Training Topics, is administered by SafetyFirst, a leading vehicle safety organization. Each month you will receive via email the training materials on the topic for the next session. The training packets include:
- A guide for your managers to assist them with preparing for the training session
- A power point presentation on the topic to guide your managers through the presentation
- A handout for your drivers on the specific topic for the month
- A safety poster for your bulletin board
This training works especially well for nonprofits with twenty or more drivers and designated fleet managers. It is equally effective for drivers of agency vehicles and for those drivers who use their personal cars on business. Since it requires only about ten minutes a month, this service can be easily incorporated into other monthly meetings.
Individual Driver Training: Internet Interactive
This service allows you to provide your drivers with high quality training on a highly flexible basis through the internet. This program is administered by SafetyFirst, a leading vehicle safety organization.
To start this program, your driver safety coordinator receives program orientation from user guides or a webcast. You complete an enrollment form for each driver, who is set up in the SafetyFirst database and assigned a name and password. Your coordinator then assigns courses to the drivers. Each enrolled driver will receive a notification that the monthly class is available. The driver will sign on to take the course, which is video in format, about four minutes in duration, and followed by a quiz to confirm understanding.
This service works well for fleets of any size, and for widely dispersed fleets. It is equally effective for drivers of agency vehicles and for those drivers who use their personal cars on business. Since it requires only internet access and about four minutes a month, this training can easily be integrated with your organization’s other communications.

The focus of the program is to provide training and education for workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, and prevention of safety and health hazards in the workplaces.
The training programs include elements such as PowerPoint presentations, facilitator guides, participant materials, checklists, and tests.
